Announcing the JRI-Poland Book Club

We proudly announce the formation of the JRI-Poland Book Club whose mission is to encourage our researchers to read and discuss fiction or non-fiction literary works that are set in the current or former geographical territories of Poland. Hadassah Lipsius and Judy Baston are teaming up to create this forum for discussion that is sure to provide meaningful and social opportunities for JRI-Poland’s readership.

Moderated by two long-time JRI-Poland board members who are avid readers themselves in addition to being expert researchers, the book club moderators will select and publicly post four potential books for the club to read. Any JRI-Poland researcher with a free NextGen account may vote on which of the four selections will become the next book of choice through a poll staged on the JRI-Poland Community Forum. The selection results will be posted publicly as well; however, attendance at the Book Club Zoom meetings will be limited to current JRI-Poland Annual Members who have paid the $54 US annual membership. JRI-Poland will attempt to secure author appearances periodically for the Book Club and recordings of the events will be added to the JRI-Poland Video Library. Access to the JRI-Poland On-Demand Video Library is also limited to current paid members.

The first four candidates for consideration are featured in the photo for this article. They include:

  1. The Lost: A Search for Six of the Six Million, by Daniel Mendelsohn (memoir, published 2006)
  2. Family History of Fear: A Memoir, by Agata Tuszynska (translated into English, 2017)
  3. Sarah Schenirer and the Bais Yaakov Movement, by Naomi Seidman (biography, 2019)
  4. The Keeper of Hidden Books, by Madeline Martin (historical fiction, 2023)
